What stood out to me this morning, was a quote from Eugene Peterson’s Introduction to his New Testament Bible translation, “The Message.” Peterson writes,
“…For Jesus is the descent of God to our lives, just as they are, not the ascent of our lives to God, hoping he might approve when he sees how hard we try.”
And then it occurred to me that the apostle Paul REALLY tried. He tried hard to do everything right. While executing with fervor his (original) mission, he suffered a major catastrophe, stricken down, blinded for days. It was a cataclysmic, life changing, life-giving death. Later he would write that he considers it an honor to suffer, truly suffer and be humiliated in this life, in order to share in, and even complete, the sufferings of Jesus — the descent of God.
How can I allow, be open to the descent of God today? How can my actions, my art, my service, my chores, my recreation allow for this descent into this flesh, this human being?
How can I learn to let go?
