Alfred University Summer Ceramics, Tuesday-Thursday July 18-20
On Tuesday, glass artist and Alfred professor, Agnus Powers presented both the morning demo and afternoon lecture. With his wild, high-energy and imaginative personality, the demo was a spectacular display of the intricacies and closely timed teamwork needed to create an enormous colorful glass sculpture of a lightbulb. The afternoon lecture was an equally entertaining tour of some of his creations and installations. I spent the balance of the day glazing the pieces that came out of the bisque kiln started Sunday night and helping load a kiln, making sure a large sculpture would fit.
Wednesday and Thursday were cleaning & organizing days, with a break for high tea on Thursday afternoon in the home of John and Andrea Gill. Their collection of pottery from famous potters was amazing. Late on Thursday evening the wood kiln and two reduction kilns were unloaded. One glaze, “Pete’s Red” was a disappointment — the copper evidently did not reduce, as the resulting glaze was a pale green. Overall, though, I was pleased with the results.
Friday is the final day, with the remaining kilns finishing and a critique of each person’s work by John Gill.
