Alfred University Summer Ceramics, Friday July 21
This is the final day of Summer Ceramics Open Workshop. We spent the morning packing and waiting for the last kilns to cool down. Finally, by afternoon all kilns were cool enough to unload.
Many of the students devoted their time this summer working on their MFA portfolio, and others are practicing studio artists; so in the afternoon, John Gill gave a critique of our best works. I missed the critique in order to get on the road earlier. Following a custom potters have, my neighboring potter, Julia and I traded mugs before I left.
It was hard to say goodbye to In-Chin, since he will not be returning next summer. I went to find him to shake his hand farewell. He motioned to me, “Come!” and walked over and reached for a lovely tall jar of his, fired in the wood kiln. Handing it to me, he told me, “Give this to your wife!” I was without words, and received his gift with utmost gratitude.
